I read Shogun during the first weeks of my four year stay in Japan. I connected to the character being a lone in a foreign culture. One day I was exploring the suburbs of Tokyo and I noticed one of the train stops was named Anjinzuka, Anjin being what they call the main character in Shogun.

I got off and realized that the whole area used to be the farmland given to William Tell by Tokugawa. The real world counterparts of the characters in Shogun. I climbed a beautiful trail that took me to a monument.

If you enjoy Shogun, I also recomend Tai-Pan and the follow up Noble House, about the founding of Hong Kong. I loved them so much that I took a vacation to Hong Kong just to visit the places in the book.

Thanks for this useful post -- I do have a tendency to lapse into interiority without action.
